Narrated Abu Hurairah: Abu Bakr sent me among those who proclaim at Mina that no polytheist should perform Hajj after this year and no naked person should go round the House (the Kabah), and that the day of greater Hajj is the day of sacrifice, and the greater Hajj is the Hajj.

1946. Commentary:
➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) as the leader of Hajj in the ninth year (Hijri), one year before his own Hajj, and on that occasion, through the verses of Surah Bara’ah (Surah Tawbah), a declaration of disassociation from the disbelievers was made.
➋ Polytheists are not permitted to enter the Sacred Sanctuary (Haram). It is necessary to prevent them from doing so by force.
➌ Covering the private parts (‘awrah) is obligatory for circumambulation (tawaf).
➍ The Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr, the day of slaughtering) is the day of the Greater Pilgrimage (Hajj al-Akbar). In Surah Tawbah it is stated: “And a proclamation from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage that Allah is free from (all obligations to) the polytheists, and so is His Messenger...” (: al-Tawbah: 3). This is a clear announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage that Allah is disassociated from the polytheists, and so is His Messenger.
➎ By Hajj al-Akbar is meant the Hajj itself, while in some narrations, ‘Umrah is referred to as the Lesser Pilgrimage (Hajj al-Asghar). These ahadith refute the popular saying among the common people that when the Day of ‘Arafah and Friday coincide, that is the Greater Pilgrimage (Hajj al-Akbar). No! Rather, every Hajj, regardless of which day it falls on, is the Greater Pilgrimage (Hajj al-Akbar). The occurrence of the Day of ‘Arafah on a Friday is merely coincidental and there is no difference in acceptance with Allah.
