Hadith 1833

Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: Riders would pass us when we accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while we were in the sacred state (wearing ihram). When they came by us, one of us would let down her outer garment from her head over her face, and when they had passed on, we would uncover our faces.

1833. Commentary: Although this chain of narration is somewhat weak, from other narrations the issue is established in the same manner: that a woman should observe veiling (purdah) from non-mahram men even while in the state of ihram. It is mentioned in the Muwatta of Imam Malik: Fatimah bint Mundhir states that we used to cover our faces while in the state of ihram, and Asma bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anha would also be with us. (Bab Takhmeer al-Muhrim Wajhahu) Also (Irwa’ al-Ghalil, Hadith 1023). However, the current situation regarding veiling is extremely distressing, as modesty and shame seem to be vanishing—except for whom Allah wills. For further details, see the benefits and issues under Hadith number 1825.
