Narrated Asma bint Abu Bakr: We came out for performing hajj along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we reached al-Araj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ alighted and we also alighted. Aishah sat beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I sat beside my father (Abu Bakr). The equipment and personal effects of Abu Bakr and of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were placed with Abu Bakr's slave on a camel. Abu Bakr was sitting and waiting for his arrival. He arrived but he had no camel with him. He asked: Where is your camel? He replied: I lost it last night. Abu Bakr said: There was only one camel, even that you have lost. He then began to beat him while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was smiling and saying: Look at this man who is in the sacred state (putting on ihram), what is he doing? Ibn Abu Rizmah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke nothing except the words: Look at this man who is in the sacred state (wearing ihram), what is he doing? He was smiling (when he uttered these words).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
1818. Commentary:
➊ It is impermissible to quarrel wrongly while in the state of ihram, and this diminishes the act of Hajj. However, there is no harm in disciplining or punishing a subordinate for their unreasonable behavior. Even so, it is better to avoid this as well.
➋ ‘Urj: With the letter jeem having a fathah and the letter ra’ being sakin, it is a settlement located approximately 90 miles on the route from Madinah to Makkah.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ Some scholars have classified the mentioned narration as hasan (good), therefore, if a subordinate makes a mistake, it is permissible to question him about it.

➋ At times, physical punishment may also be given for a mistake, but the condition is that it should not be very severe, it should not be on the face, and the one who made the mistake should not be cursed.

➌ The meaning of the statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was that now let him go.

➍ When admonishing a respected personality for a mistake or for something contrary to what is preferable, it is necessary to keep their honor and respect in consideration.
