Hadith 1813

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his voice in talbiyah; he then mentioned the wordings of talbiyah like the tradition narrated by Ibn Umar. The people used to add the words dhal-ma'arij (the Possessor of ladders) and similar other words (to talbiyah) while the Prophet ﷺ heard them utter these words, but he did not say anything to them.

1813. Commentary:
➊ Saying the talbiyah during Hajj and ‘Umrah is an emphasized Sunnah (sunnah mu’akkadah). If someone abandons it, he will be deprived of the reward of the Sunnah. However, some Imams consider it obligatory (wajib). Therefore, according to them, if it is abandoned, a compensatory sacrifice (dam) becomes obligatory. However, this second position does not seem correct, because abandoning the talbiyah does not entail the abandonment of any pillar (rukn). Therefore, the performance of the rites (arkan) of Hajj will take the place of the talbiyah. As for the wording of the talbiyah, the best is to suffice and restrict oneself to the very words of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), because he himself maintained regularity upon them. However, if someone adds (words with correct meaning), it is also permissible, because when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) heard some Companions (radi Allahu anhum) calling the talbiyah with different words, he remained silent and did not object. (Awn al-Ma‘bud)

➋ This magnificent phrase encompasses all types of tawhid (monotheism) of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted: that is, tawhid al-uluhiyyah (oneness of worship), tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship), and tawhid al-asma’ wa’l-sifat (oneness of names and attributes). And by its repetition, the servant expresses his servitude (‘ubudiyyah).
