Hadith 1811

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet ﷺ heard a man say: Labbayk (always ready to obey) on behalf of Shubrumah. He asked: Who is Shubrumah? He replied: A brother or relative of mine. He asked: Have you performed hajj on your own behalf? He said: No. He said: perform hajj on your own behalf, then perform it on behalf of Shubrumah.

1811. Commentary:
With the letter "sheen" and "raa" having a dammah (u-sound), while the "baa" is sakin (silent) and the "meem" is maftooh (has a fatha, a-sound).
➋ In the case of performing Hajj on behalf of another (Hajj badal), the pilgrim must have already performed Hajj for himself; only then can he perform Hajj on behalf of someone else, otherwise not.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ The mentioned narration has been declared weak in chain (sanad) by our esteemed researcher, whereas other scholars have declared it authentic. There has been a detailed discussion regarding this. From the detailed discussion of the scholars, the opinion favoring the authentication of the hadith appears to be closer to correctness. For further details, see: (Irwa’ al-Ghalil by al-Albani, no. 994; Sahih Ibn Hibban (Mawarid al-Zam’an) with the verification of Husayn Salim Asad al-Darani, hadith: 926; Sunan Ibn Majah with the verification of Dr. Bashar Awwad, no. 2903). From this, it is understood that performing Hajj on behalf of another (Hajj al-Badal) is permissible.

➋ When needed, Hajj al-Badal can be performed on behalf of any person. However, if a person died in a state of shirk (polytheism), then Hajj al-Badal cannot be performed on his behalf. And Allah knows best.

➌ It is a condition for Hajj al-Badal that the one performing Hajj must have already performed Hajj for himself.

➍ The same ruling applies to ‘Umrah.

➎ In Hajj al-Badal, when reciting the talbiyah (labbaik), the name of the person on whose behalf Hajj or ‘Umrah is being performed should be mentioned.

➋ Performing Hajj on behalf of another (Hajj badal) is permissible.
➌ The condition for Hajj badal is that the person performing Hajj must have already performed Hajj for himself.
➍ The one performing Hajj badal should intend on behalf of the person for whom he is performing Hajj at the time of donning the ihram, and when proclaiming the talbiyah, he should mention that person's name.
➎ The same ruling applies to ‘Umrah.
