Narrated Abdullah ibn Qurt: The Prophet ﷺ said: The greatest day in Allah's sight is the day of sacrifice and next the day of resting which Isa said on the authority of Thawr is the second day. Five or six sacrificial camels were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they began to draw near to see which he would sacrifice first. When they fell down dead, he said something in a low voice, which I could not catch. So I asked: What did he say? He was told that he had said: Anyone who wants can cut off a piece.

1765. Commentary:
➊ Even animals were aware of the majesty and dignity of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and they considered it an honor to be slaughtered by his hand.
➋ It is also permissible to offer a non-specified animal as a sacrificial gift (hadi).
➌ In authentic ahadith, Friday («خیر یوم ») has been declared the best day (see: Sahih Muslim, al-Jumu‘ah, Hadith: 854), and in this hadith, the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) has been called the greatest of days. The reconciliation and synthesis between these ahadith is as follows: among the days of the week, Friday is the most virtuous, and among the days of the year, the tenth of Dhu al-Hijjah (Yawm al-Nahr) is the most virtuous. If the Day of Sacrifice coincides with Friday, then both virtues are combined; if they are separate, then the virtue of the Day of Sacrifice takes precedence, as mentioned in this hadith.
