Hadith 175

Narrated Some Companions of the Prophet: The Prophet ﷺ saw a person offering prayer, and on the back of his foot a small part equal to the space of a dirham remained unwashed; the water did not reach it. The Prophet ﷺ commanded him to repeat the ablution and prayer.

Brief Explanation
1؎: From both hadiths of the chapter, it is understood that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not merely command washing the dry spot, but rather ordered the complete ablution (wudu). From this, it is evident that the limbs of ablution should be washed consecutively, and there should not be a gap between them; that is, it is not permissible to have an interval in washing the limbs of ablution. There are both types of opinions on this issue; the summary is that if there is not excessive delay, it is permissible, otherwise not.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊ It is understood that continuity (tasalsul) is obligatory in ablution (wudu).
➋ If a person does not maintain continuity and, after washing some limbs, gets up such that the previously washed limbs become dry, then he should perform ablution again.
➌ If even a small area remains dry, the ablution is not valid, and consequently, the prayer will also not be valid.
