Hadith 1725

حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، عَنْ جَرِيرٍ ، عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " بَرِيدًا " .
Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: He then reported the same tradition as mentioned above but he mentioned (in this version) the word “mail post”.

1725. Commentary: This narration regarding "buraid" is considered shaadh (anomalous) according to some Imams. And one «برید» is equivalent to four farsakh, and one farsakh is three miles. (Thus, a buraid is twelve miles.) According to the scholars, this is considered the distance of half a day’s journey. In this regard, according to those Imams, it would be permissible for a woman to undertake a short journey without a mahram, whereas according to other Imams, it is absolutely impermissible for a woman to travel without a mahram.
