حَدَّثَنَا النُّفَيْلِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ ابْنٍ لِأَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لِأَزْوَاجِهِ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ : " هَذِهِ ثُمَّ ظُهُورَ الْحُصْرِ " .
Narrated Abu Waqid al-Laythi: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying to his wives during the Farewell Pilgrimage: This (is the pilgrimage for you); afterwards stick to the surface of the mats (i. e. should stay at home).

1722. Commentary: This is evidence that Hajj is obligatory only once. Beyond that, it is considered voluntary (nafl). However, encouragement has also been given to perform Hajj and Umrah repeatedly. The statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is: “Perform Hajj and Umrah repeatedly, for indeed they remove poverty and sins just as a furnace removes impurities from iron, gold, and silver. And the reward for an accepted Hajj is nothing except Paradise.” (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Book of Hajj, Hadith: 810 and Sunan an-Nasa’i, Hadith: 2631)
