Hadith 1698

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ preached and said: Abstain from avarice, for those who had been before you were annihilated due to avarice. It (avarice) commanded them to show niggardliness; it commanded them to cut off their relationship with their nearest relatives, so they cut off. It commanded them to show profligacy, so they showed it.

1698. Commentary: In the Arabic language, (shuhh) refers to that composite attribute in which both greed and miserliness are combined. And this is more blameworthy than mere miserliness: that a person does not spend where spending is required, rather he remains eager to take. Furthermore, when this quality is found among close relatives, it is even more reprehensible.
