A man from Thaqif on the authority of his father reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ urinate, and he sprinkled water on the private parts of his body.
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
134. Commentary:
➊ Sprinkling water on the private part is not a part of ablution (wudu), however, it is a Sunnah practice.
➋ The wisdom behind this act could be that sometimes a person, due to some illness or other reasons, becomes doubtful whether a drop of urine has come out. Such a person is excused, therefore, in view of this excuse or to remove the doubt, this method has been prescribed: after ablution, if water is sprinkled on the private part, the doubt will be removed, insha Allah.
➌ If a person faces the above-mentioned situation, he should do so, and even for one who does not face this situation, sprinkling water with a handful is also Sunnah, because the aforementioned reason and cause are not established from the hadith.
➍ Some researchers are of the opinion that a person who is healthy, not suffering from incontinence, and stands up without properly relieving himself after urination, and is certain that a drop will fall after performing ablution or during prayer, then for such a person, sprinkling water will not suffice. Rather, it is necessary for him to wash the place contaminated by urine, then perform ablution and pray, because urine is impure, whether it is a drop or more. In terms of evidence, this position appears to be strong and preferable. And Allah knows best.
➎ The meaning of «تَوَضَّأَ» will be: when they finished ablution.

135. Commentary: The aforementioned narration has been related by Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah from his two teachers, ‘Abbas ibn Muhammad al-Duri and Ahmad ibn Harb, as is evident from reading the chain of transmission. From the above wording, the intention of the Imam is that one of my teachers said «ونَضَحَ فَرْجَهُ», while the other teacher said «فَنَضَحَ فَرْجَهُ». In other words, there is a difference between “waaw” (و) and “faa” (ف). “Faa” (ف) implies sequence, meaning that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed this action after completing the ablution (wudu). “Waaw” (و) does not carry this implication. Recording such subtle differences is a clear proof of the trustworthiness, integrity, and painstaking effort of the hadith scholars. May Allah have mercy upon them, a vast mercy.

Benefits and Issues:
Sprinkling water on the private area after ablution (wudu) is Sunnah and recommended (mustahabb). In addition to the reward for following the Sunnah, another benefit is that, due to weakness of the bladder, sometimes there is a fear of drops (of urine) coming out; this practice puts an end to such doubts (waswasah).

The Sunnah of Sprinkling Water on the Private Parts after Ablution
13: After performing ablution (wudu), one should sprinkle water on the private parts. [سنن ابي داود: 168 وسنده حسن]
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma, when he performed ablution, would sprinkle water on his private parts. [مصنف ابن ابي شيبه ج 1 ص 167 ح 1775 وسنده صحيح]
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma said:
If any one of you performs ablution, then he should take a handful of water and sprinkle it on his private parts. After that, if he feels any (moisture) due to a whispering (waswasah), he should assume that it is from the water which he sprinkled.
[مسند مسدد بحواله المطالب العالية: 117 و سنده صحيح، وقال ابن حجر: ’’صحيح موقوف‘‘ / مختصر المطالب العالية: 117]
Note: Sprinkling water on a handkerchief after ablution is not established from any hadith.

Commentary:
(1)
This act is not a part of ablution (wudu); however, doing so after ablution is Sunnah.
(2)
Sprinkling water on the private part of the body means to sprinkle water on the garment that covers that part of the body.
(3)
The scholars (ulama) have stated its wisdom to be that it removes the doubt or misgiving (waswasa) regarding the possible discharge of a drop of urine.

Lexical Explanation:
«فَلْيَنْتُرْ» is derived from "natar." The meaning is that after urinating, one should pull and squeeze the private part, that is, press and pull it firmly so that any remaining drops of urine inside are expelled. In some manuscripts, instead of «فَلْيَنْتُرْ», the wording is «فَلْيَنْثُرْ», that is, "tha" instead of "ta." However, the meaning of both is almost the same.
Benefits and Issues:
➊ After relieving oneself, squeezing or shaking the private part three times is so that if any dischargeable drop of urine remains, it will be expelled and complete assurance will be achieved.
➋ Although this narration is weak, the narration regarding protection from drops of urine supports it, in which it is mentioned: "They are being punished in the grave because they did not protect themselves from drops of urine."
Narrator of the Hadith: (Isa ibn Yazdad) Both father and son are unknown (majhool). Ibn Ma'in says: There is no acquaintance with Isa or his father. ‘Uqayli says: They have not been followed up (in narration), nor are they known. Yazdad has been read with "ya" and "za," and also with "ba" and "ra," that is, Bardad.
