Hadith 1669

Buhaysah reported on the authority of his father: My father sought permission from the Prophet ﷺ. (When permission was granted and he came near him) he lifted his shirt, and began to kiss him and embrace him (out of love for him). He asked: Messenger of Allah, what is the thing which it is unlawful to refuse? He replied: Water. He again asked: Prophet of Allah, what is the thing which it is unlawful to refuse? He replied: Salt. He again asked: Prophet of Allah, what is the thing which it is unlawful to refuse? He said: To do good is better for you.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
1669. Commentary: Water and salt are such common and widely used items that to be miserly with them is an extremely reprehensible trait. Especially water, when it is being obtained from natural sources without hardship, such as a pond, spring, canal, or well. However, in situations where effort and wealth have been expended to obtain the water, then the owner has discretion. Nevertheless, giving it in charity is certainly more virtuous and an honorable act.
