Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
1646. Commentary: This narration is weak in its chain of transmission. However, in terms of meaning, it is correct in that, within the limits of apparent means in this world, people do indeed find themselves in need of asking one another. That is why it has been said that whenever such a need arises, it should be expressed to righteous people, because pious individuals are not stingy in wishing well for any needy Muslim and in assisting to the extent of their ability. Their income is lawful (halal), and in their assistance there is no element of reminding others of favors. This hadith has no connection with deceased individuals; rather, this request can only be made to those righteous elders who are alive and present, who can help within the means available—such as general assistance, loans, recommendations, supplication (du'a), etc. As for those pious individuals who have departed from this world, seeking help and making supplication to them is forbidden (haram) and polytheism (shirk). Because seeking help from them is beyond the realm of means—for example, seeking help for healing, sustenance, children, to gain benefit or to be protected from harm, etc. The Noble Qur'an and authentic hadiths are filled with material on this subject.
