Narrated Ubayy ibn Umarah: I asked: Messenger of Allah ﷺ may I wipe over the socks? He replied: Yes. He asked: For one day? He replied: For one day. He again asked: And for two days? He replied: For two days too. He again asked: And for three days? He replied: Yes, as long as you wish. Abu Dawud said: Another version says: He asked him about the period until he reached the period of seven days. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: Yes, as long as you wish (i. e. there is no time limit). Abu Dawud said: There is a variance in the chain of narrators of this tradition. The chain is not strong. Another chain from Yahya bin Ayyub is also disputed.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊ A resident may wipe over his leather socks (khuffayn) for one day and one night, and a traveler for three days and three nights, as is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud, hadith [157].
➋ The beginning of the period for wiping will be counted from after «حدث», starting from the first wiping.
➌ The narration of Ubayy bin ‘Ammarah radi Allahu anhu, in which more than three days is mentioned, is weak. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah and Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah have declared it weak. [عون المعبود]
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has also graded it as weak.

Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Commentary:
This narration is weak in terms of its chain of transmission; however, in a subsequent report from the Companions, the permissibility of wiping (over the socks) for more than three days in case of necessity is found.

➊ This hadith has not been accepted due to its weakness and because it contradicts the authentic (sahih) and sound (hasan) ahadith which specify the duration.
➋ The chain of narration (isnad) of this hadith is not authentic, whereas those ahadith are authentic in which the limit for a traveler is set as three days and three nights, and for a resident as one day and one night.
➌ A weak narration is disregarded in comparison to an authentic and strong hadith.
➍ Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has transmitted the consensus of the hadith scholars regarding the weakness of this hadith in Sharh al-Muhadhdhab.
➎ Imam Ahmad rahimahullah has said that its narrators are unknown, and Ibn al-Jawzi has considered this hadith to be fabricated (mawdu‘).

Narrator of the Hadith:
Abi bin ‘Ammarah radi Allahu anhu — “Hamzah” has a dammah on the “ha”, a fathah on the “ba”, and the “ya” is stressed (shaddah). “‘Ammarah” has a kasrah under the “‘ayn”, though sometimes it is also read with a dammah on the “‘ayn”. He is a well-known Madinan Ansari companion. He resided in Egypt. Ibn Hibban has stated that he is among those companions who had the honor and virtue of praying facing both qiblahs (Bayt al-Maqdis and Bayt Allah).
