Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The witr is a duty, so he who does not observe it does not belong to us; the witr is a duty, so he who does not observe it does not belong to us; the witr is a duty, so he who does not observe it does not belong to us.

Hadith Takhrij« تفرد بہ أبو داود، (تحفة الأشراف:1986)، وقد أخرجہ: مسند احمد (5/357) (ضعیف) » (اس کے راوی عبیداللہ العتکی ضعیف ہیں)
1؎ : This hadith is weak; if it were authentic, its meaning would be that the recitation of Witr is established. This is supported by the hadith which Ibn al-Mundhir has recorded with these words «الوتر حق وليس بواجب» meaning that Witr is an established matter but not obligatory.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Buraidah (RA) from his father: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "The Witr is a duty, so he who does not offer it, is not one of us." [Reported by Abu Dawud with a Laiyin (weak) chain of narrators and Al-Hakim graded it Sahih (authentic)]. The above mentioned Hadith has a Shahid (supporting narration) which is weak, reported by Ahmad from Abu Hurairah (RA).
Explanation: Our esteemed researcher and Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah have also declared this narration to be weak, but the researchers of al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah have, on the basis of other supporting evidences, graded it as hasan li-ghayrihi (good due to supporting chains). For details, see: (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 15/447; 38/127, 128). In any case, despite the aforementioned hadith being acceptable as evidence and hasan, it does not indicate the obligation (wujub) of witr, rather, from the words mentioned in this hadith, only the importance and emphasis (ta’kid) of witr is established. Therefore, the preferred position is that this hadith should be understood as emphasizing (ta’kid), and the position of the majority (jumhur) should be adopted, that witr is Sunnah and not obligatory (wajib), as has been detailed under Hadith: 293.
