Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: The Prophet ﷺ said: Allah is single (witr) and loves what is single, so observe the witr, you who follow the Quran.

1416. Commentary:
➊ The term "witr" applies to two meanings. One is the witr prayer, whose number of units is one, three, or five. Although this prayer is supererogatory (nafl), it is extremely important and emphasized, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to observe it even during travel. On this basis, some imams consider it "obligatory" (wajib). The second meaning is "standing at night" (qiyam al-layl) and "tahajjud." Since the original and most appropriate time for witr is this, it is referred to as "witr." In the aforementioned hadith, this second meaning is what comes to mind. There is an indication of this in the narration.
➋ This instruction is addressed to the "people of the Qur'an" (ahl al-Qur'an), and all Muslims are "people of the Qur'an," but the memorizers (huffaz) and scholars are especially addressed by it.
