Hadith 1402

Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir: I said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Are there two prostrations in Surah al-Hajj? He replied: Yes; if anyone does not make two prostrations, he should not recite them.

➊ From this hadith, it is understood that both prostrations (sajdahs) of Surah Al-Hajj should be performed. Regarding the one who does not perform them, it is stated that he should not recite it. The wisdom behind this appears to be that the recitation of the Noble Qur’an is recommended (mustahabb), and performing the prostration of recitation (sajdat al-tilawah) is a sunnah. It is better to abandon the recommended act than to abandon a sunnah; that is, one should not recite it at all so that he does not become one who abandons a sunnah.
➋ ‘Umar, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas, Abu Musa, Abu Darda’, ‘Ammar ibn Yasir, and other noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) used to perform both prostrations in Surah Al-Hajj. For details, see: (Nayl al-Awtar: 3/110). Therefore, to declare this narration as inapplicable is incorrect.
