Ibn al-Had said: Nafi bin Jubair asked me: In how many days do you recite the Quran ? I said: I have not fixed any part from it for daily round. Nafi said to me: Do not say: I do not fix any part of it for daily round, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I recited a part of the Quran. The narrator Ibn al-Had said: I think I have transmitted this tradition from al-Mughirah bin Shubah.

1392. Commentary: The meaning of "hizb" (portion) is to designate a part (of something) as a regular recitation or devotional practice (wird and wazifah). The aforementioned elder refused to do so. Upon this, Nafi‘ rahimahullah said: There is no need to reject this, because dividing the Qur’an into portions and reading it in parts is itself established from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Thus, the divisions of the Noble Qur’an into portions (such as quarter, half, third, and juz’ (para), etc.), as well as the rukū‘ (sectional markers), although these were not designated by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, have been created for the ease of the common people. And the basis for this is this hadith and other similar ahadith.
