Hadith 1308

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet ﷺ said: May Allah have mercy on a man who gets up at night and prays, and awakens his wife; if she refuses, he should sprinkle water on her face. May Allah have mercy on a woman who gets up at night and prays, and awakens her husband; if he refuses, she would sprinkle water on his face.

1308. Commentary: Benefit: The aforementioned action is a magnificent practical exegesis of the verse: ﴿تَعاوَنوا عَلَى البِرِّوَالتَّقوىٰ﴾... Surah al-Ma'idah. And in this is also the indication that strongly encouraging one's relatives and friends towards acts of goodness is a recommended and desirable deed.

1611. Commentary:

➊ This is not a matter of just one or two nights, but rather it is their habit that they do so. How excellent are this husband and wife! In these words of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), there is a supplication for them, praise, encouragement, and also the reality that they are deserving of Allah’s mercy. May Allah grant us the same.

➋ Just as supplication for mercy is made for the deceased, likewise, it is permissible to supplicate for mercy for the living as well.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ If either the husband or the wife is accustomed to performing the Tahajjud prayer, they should try to instill this habit in the other.

➋ If sleep prevails, it will become easier to wake up by sprinkling water. Then, after performing ablution (wudu), the prayer can be offered. The meaning is that every effort should be made so that neither the husband nor the wife is deprived of this virtue.

➌ This act of cooperation and encouragement in goodness is a means of Allah’s mercy.
