Hadith 1285

Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet ﷺ as saying: In the morning alms are due for every bone in man's body. His salutation to everyone he meets is alms, his enjoining good is alms, his forbidding what is evil is alms, the removal of harmful thing from the way is alms, to have sexual intercourse with one's wife if alms, and two rak'ahs which one prays in the Duha serve instead of that. Abu Dawud said: The tradition narrated by 'Abbad is more perfect (than the version narrated by Musaddad). Musaddad did not mention in his version "the command (of good) and the prohibition (of evil)". Instead, he added in his version saying: "Such and such. " Ibn Ma'na added in his version: "They (the people) said: Messenger of Allah, how is that one of us fulfills his desire and still there are alms for him (i. e. is rewarded)? He replied: What do you think if you had unlawful sexual intercourse, would he not have been a sinner ?

Explanation & Benefits

1285. Commentary:
The prayer performed immediately after sunrise is called "Ishraq," and the one performed when the sun has risen a bit higher is called "Duha" (forenoon prayer, Chasht). In reality, this is one and the same prayer. Its minimum is two rak‘ahs and its maximum is eight rak‘ahs.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
Duthur:
Duthur is the plural of dathar, which refers to abundant wealth.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Any action performed within the limits prescribed by the Shariah, provided that the intention is to adhere to the Shariah and fulfill one’s obligation, becomes a source of reward and merit—even fulfilling natural and sexual needs.
➋ If the intention is correct, it becomes a cause for reward, just as violating or transgressing the boundaries and restrictions of the Shariah is a cause for sin and harm.
➌ In this way, every good deed and action, remembrance (dhikr), enjoining good (amr bil ma‘ruf), and forbidding evil (nahi ‘anil munkar) is also charity (sadaqah), that is, a means of reward and merit.

Hadith Commentary:

Benefits and Issues:
When a person wakes up in the morning in such a state that every limb and every joint of his body is sound and healthy, then this is the grace and favor of Allah Ta’ala, which demands that a person should give charity as gratitude on behalf of every joint. Every good deed and act of reward can become charity, and if a person performs two units (rak‘ahs) of Duha prayer every morning, then gratitude is rendered on behalf of every joint, because prayer (salah) is such an act of worship in which every limb and every joint of a person participates.

This hadith proves that every adult should, every morning, perform at least two rak‘ahs as gratitude for his health and well-being, so that Allah Ta’ala may preserve his health and well-being, and every limb and every joint of his body may remain safe from evil, corruption, and destruction.

1286. Commentary:
Explanation: These two rak‘ahs suffice for this obligatory charity; from this, it should not be understood that they also suffice in place of the obligatory prayers (fara’id).

➊ Benefits and Issues

In other hadiths, it has been clarified that Allah, the Exalted, has granted human beings three hundred and sixty (360) joints. One should reflect on what a tremendous blessing the joints are from Allah, the Exalted. If the joints of the bones were taken away, life would become extremely difficult for a person; in matters of eating and drinking, he would be dependent on others; in matters of relieving himself, he would be in need of someone; in walking, moving, sitting, and standing—in short, in everything—he would be waiting for the favor and helping hand of others. But are we expressing gratitude for these great blessings, or are we, day by day, becoming more indebted to Allah, the Exalted? With just two units (rak‘ahs) of prayer, the tax for 360 joints is paid.
