Narrated Imran ibn Husayn: I went on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I was present with him at the conquest. He stayed eighteen days in Makkah and prayed only two rak'ahs (at each time of prayer). And he said: You who live in the town must pray four; we are travellers.

1؎: The specification of the duration for shortening the prayer (qasr) cannot be established from such weak hadiths, because there is not even the slightest indication in them that if the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had intended to stay longer, he would have performed the full prayer. A clear proof for this is the journey of the Battle of Tabuk, during which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stayed for twenty days and continued to perform qasr throughout, and during the Battle of Hunayn, he performed qasr for forty days. Furthermore, the example of a warrior (ghazi) is like that of a traveler who does not have any clear knowledge regarding the duration of his journey or stay.
´Abu An-Nadrah said:` "Imran bin Husain was asked about the traveler's prayer. He said: 'I performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah, and he prayed two Rak'ah. I performed Hajj with Abu Bakr, and he prayed two Rak'ah and with Umar, and he prayed two Rak;ah; and with Uthman for six years of his Khilafah, or eight years, and he prayed two Rak'ah."
