Hadith 1126

حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، قَالَتْ : " صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حُجْرَتِهِ وَالنَّاسُ يَأْتَمُّونَ بِهِ مِنْ وَرَاءِ الْحُجْرَةِ " .
Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the prayer in his apartment and people were following him behind apartment.

1126. Commentary:
When the rows of worshippers are connected and there is a curtain or wall between the rows—even if this situation is between the imam and the followers—and they are well aware of the imam’s conditions, then following (the imam) is permissible. For example, nowadays mosques have multiple floors, or women are behind a curtain. However, following (the imam) via radio or television is not permissible, because the rows are not connected. Furthermore, broadcasting these acts of worship via television is itself highly questionable from a legal (shar‘i) perspective, let alone appointing as imam the person who appears on the television screen.
