Hadith 1117

This tradition has also been transmitted through a different chain of narrators by Jabir bin Abdullah. This version adds: He (the Prophet) turned to the people and said: When one of you comes (on Friday) while the imam is preaching, he should pray two rak'ahs and make them short.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
1117. Commentary:
➊ There is no fixed number of voluntary (nafl) prayers before the Friday sermon (khutbah). At the very least, two units (rak‘ahs) of Tahiyyat al-Masjid (greeting the mosque) must be performed. This is highly emphasized, to the extent that even if the imam is delivering the sermon, one should briefly perform two rak‘ahs and then sit, unless the sermon would be missed, in which case one should join the congregation.
➋ During the sermon, the imam should fulfill the duty of enjoining good and forbidding evil (amr bil-ma‘ruf wa nahi ‘anil-munkar), and inform the people about the rulings of the Shari‘ah. However, if the details of a matter are not known, he should first ascertain them and then issue a ruling, just as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam first inquired, “Have you performed the prayer?”
➌ This hadith is also used as evidence that Tahiyyat al-Masjid should be performed even during the prohibited times, and should not be omitted at any time.
