Jabir said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seated himself on the pulpit on a Friday he said, Sit down. Ibn Masud heard that and sat down at the door of mosque, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said: Come here, Abdullah bin Masud. Abu Dawud said: This tradition is known as mursal (the successor reports directly from the Prophet, omitting then name of the Companion). The people narrated it from the Prophet ﷺ on the authority of Ata. Makhlad is his teacher.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
1091. Commentary:
➊ The preacher (khatib) has the right to address the listeners as needed, and observe the manner in which Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu complied with the command of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: as soon as he heard the order, he sat down and did not take even a single step forward. To slander such people by saying that, after the passing of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam (na'udhu billah), they became apostates or hypocrites is nothing but an expression of one's own inner malice.
➋ From the ahadith, it is understood that listeners are not permitted to converse among themselves during the sermon (khutbah), but the preacher may speak.
➌ This hadith also indicates that it is necessary to comply with the commands of Allah the Exalted and His Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam immediately, without delay.
