Hadith 1088

Saeed bin Yazid said: The call to the (Friday) prayer was made at the gate of the mosque in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he sat on the pulpit, and of Abu Bakr and Umar. The narrator then repeated the same tradition as reported by Yunus.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
1088. Commentary:
There was a door for those coming and going, located approximately in the middle of the northern outer wall of the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid Nabawi), which was opposite the pulpit (minbar). The call to prayer (adhan) used to be given at this spot because from here, the voice could easily reach the general population. That is, the adhan should be given from its well-known designated place. There is no legal (shar‘i) significance to giving the adhan directly in front of the imam, as is seen in some places.

Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai
The First Adhan on Friday
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’ib bin Yazid radi Allahu anhu that in the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and in the time of Abu Bakr and Umar radi Allahu anhuma, when the imam would sit on the pulpit on Friday, the first adhan would be given. al-kh [صحيح بخاري: 916]

Imam Sulaiman bin Tarkhan al-Taymi rahimahullah, an adherent of the Ahl al-Hadith «مدلس من الطبقة الثانيه عند الحافظ ابن حجر رحمه الله، و من الثالثه عندنا», has narrated this same hadith from Imam Ibn Shihab with the following words:
In the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Abu Bakr, and Umar radi Allahu anhuma, the adhan would be given near the pulpit. al-kh [

The chain of this narration up to Imam Sulaiman al-Taymi is authentic, but this narration is weak due to tadlis (concealment in transmission).

According to two types of people, this narration is absolutely authentic:
➊ Those who blindly rely on the classification of tabaqat (categories) by Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah.
➋ Those who outright deny the effect of trustworthy narrators being mudallis (practicing tadlis), i.e., the Jama‘at al-Mas‘udiyyin, which is one of the sects of the modern-day Khawarij.

Note: The narration about giving the adhan at the door of the mosque [سنن ابي داود: 1088] is weak due to Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar being a mudallis «عن», and is rejected and denounced because it contradicts the narration of Sulaiman al-Taymi.
