باب إِذَا وَافَقَ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ يَوْمَ عِيدٍChapter: If ’Eid Occurs On A Friday.
Hadith 1073

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُصَفَّى ، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ الْوَصَّابِيُّ الْمَعْنَى ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ الْمُغِيرَةِ الضَّبِّيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ رُفَيْعٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ فِي يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا عِيدَانِ ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَجْزَأَهُ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، وَإِنَّا مُجَمِّعُونَ " . قَالَ عُمَرُ : عَنْ شُعْبَةَ .
Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet ﷺ said: Two festivals ('Id and Friday) have synchronised on this day. If anyone does not want to offer the Friday prayer, the Eid prayer is sufficient for him. But we shall offer the Friday prayer. This tradition has been narrated by Umar from Shubah.

1073. Commentary:
This narration is authentic according to Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah. The hadith of Sunan Abi Dawud [1070] is also similar in meaning. According to these ahadith, performing Jumu‘ah is an obligation (‘azimah), and leaving it is a concession (rukhsah); therefore, those coming from distant places may avail themselves of this concession.
