Hadith 1055

Aishah, the wife of Prophet ﷺ, said: The people used to attend the Friday prayer from their houses and from the suburbs of Madina.

1055. Commentary:
➊ The settlements of «عوالي» were at a distance of three hundred and eight miles from Madinah Munawwarah. From this hadith, it is understood that Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah) is obligatory upon the inhabitants of villages adjoining the city, and they should attend the Friday prayer.
➋ This hadith also indicates that collectivity is desired in Jumu‘ah. Therefore, as much as possible, Muslims should express their unity and collectivity in this weekly gathering. Establishing Friday prayer in different mosques within one city is, from a jurisprudential or fatwa perspective, undoubtedly permissible. However, in the best generations (khayr al-quroon), there was not as much division and disunity as is seen today in every street and alley.
